“Beyond the Gates of Splendor”, “End of the Spear” + “The Grandfathers” (DVD)

These three films will blow you away, based in 1956 on the true story of five young missionaries, among them Jim Elliot and Nate Saint, who set out to make contact with the Waodani (A violent Ecuadorian tribe defined by their savage revenge killing) with the goal to share the gospel with them.

Shortly after making contact with a few members of the tribe the five missionaries are savagely, and shockingly, speared to death by members of the tribe. Their death increases the love and compassion of the wives and children of those men to move into the Wadani tribe and teach them about God. This is an amazing true story of Love and Forgiveness.

The thing I love most about these films is in the beginning the Waodani tribe are as savage and violent and cold blooded as you could possibly imagine, the life of these tribe people revolved around death, revenge and spearing. Literally Every person in the tribe have had their immediate family (mum/dad/sister/brother etc) speared at one point. But through the love of God demonstrated through the missionaries, their wives and their children, even the heart of the most violent and savage warrior in that tribe was radically transformed!

Every person in the tribe now has an intimate and very real relationship with God! A relationship that’s actually more real than the relationship a lot of people in church experience!!

“Beyond the Gates of Splendor” is DVD 1 of 3, this is the documentary
“End of the Spear” is DVD 2 of 3, this is the actual film
“The Grandfathers” is DVD 3 of 3, this is the follow up documentary of the grandson/Waodani tribe/family members etc

Book Review: Jesus Culture

I’ve just (for the second time) finished reading ‘Jesus Culture’ by Banning Liebscher, a phenomenal book describing the culture that is being expressed and developed within this generation. Revivalists that are marked by their honour for those who have gone before them, their passionate love for Jesus and their dedication to a life of prayer! To say i am inspired every time i pick this book up is an understatement – it’s fuelling a hunger inside of me to see more people connect with and release their full potential in God’s purposes for their life!

This book is ideal for younger Christians who are passionate and hungry to see the culture change around them, to in fact be the change that they want the world to see. It’s predominantly written towards that younger generation (say 11-30) but after reading it through a few times now, i would recommend it to anyone who wants to stir up faith in their own generation and learn how to work together to forward that goal! Every youth or young adult leader should get themselves a copy, because it not only inspires you to see the potential within every young person, but it inspires you personally to stretch and challenge yourself to go their first!

Fantastic read! One of those books that you’ll want to read again and again!

Terry Law – How to Hear Gods voice (4-part audio teaching)

Terry Law is a great teacher, his life demonstrates what a person can do for God when they launch out into Gods will leaving self security completely behind.

Their is quite a bit of background noise in this teaching when the volume is turned up but if you can ignore that then this is a great teaching.

CD One – The first session uses a few of Terry’s own life testimonies to demonstrate the importance of listening out for the blowing of the wind and flowing with it. Many times when you’re walking down the street you don’t notice the wind blowing except for when it’s blowing you around and messing up your hair – God’s voice is often like this!

CD Two – In this session Terry talks about the difference between the “Logos” word and the “Rhēma” word.

Logos word (G3056) = This is usually the written word (i.e. The written Bible)
Heb 13:22 nkj  “…I appeal to you, brethren, bear with the word [logos] of exhortation, for I have written to you in few words “
Rhēma word (G4487) = This is always the spoken word, the literal Greek definition is “that which is or has been uttered by the living voice”.  Rhēma is the revelatory, spontaneous, flowing, spoken word of God straight from his living voice. The root word is the word rheō which means “to utter”.

CD Three – Terry carries on this teaching in the third session with the importance of meditating on God’s Rhēma. He explains how the word “meditate” means to “turn over, chew upon and softly mutter”. A cow will chew on grass and ingest it but the cow is then able to bring the food back up and chew over it again (it’s called “mastication”). Meditating on Gods word is the same as this, it’s very different to just memorizing scripture.

The only way to meditate on Gods word is to turn it over and over whilst you softly, but audibly, speak it to yourself.

Obey what you hear: He also speaks about the importance of obeying what you hear, it is a pattern of disobedience in your life that will harden your heart.

The Shack – Audiobook

I would highly recommend this whether you’ve read the book or not. With an audiobook this good you can receive so much listening to something like this than you can just by reading the book alone.

Put your headphones on and allow God to download revelation from the story into your spirit! I often sat on the bus listening to this completely amazed at the revelation I received from it.

The narration in this is one of the best i’ve heard. I’ve only listened to a few audiobooks, most of them boring and hard to listen too, but the narration in this is very impressive.

Instead of doing a full review of the storyline and plot (which you can get by reading the back cover or any google search) i’m going to reference to a few of the things I received from God whilst listening to it on my ipod.

One thing that stands out to me when listening to this story is a quote by a guy called John Bevere who once said:

“We don’t base truth on expereince, we base truth on the word of God and if our experience doesn’t line-up with the word of God then it just means that we have more learning to do until it does!”

Here’s some quotes from the book:

038 a meeting of hearts

God: “You demand your independence but then complain that I actually love you enough to give it to you.”

God: “All evil flows from independence but if I were to simply revoke all the choices of independence creating robots the world as you know it would cease to exist and real love would have no meaning.”

“If God takes away the consequences of independent choices he takes away the future and present possibility of real love. Love that forces itself is not love atall. Perhaps Adam should have been stopped before he chose his independence? 1 corinthians 13:4 says “Love …does not demand its own way. …and it keeps no record of being wronged.””

“Their was no way to create freedom without a cost, God knew what it would cost him and it’s still costing him today more than people realize.”

God has bound and limited himself and loved us enough not to override our free will. If we’re outside of God’s will and covenant we have no right to expect anything from him!

God does not send suffering and loss, he is a loving God but he cannot actively interfere in anyone’s suffering except through partnership with Him/Her. God can do anything he wants but he chose to limit himself. Partnership means we have a part and God has a part.

God loved us enough to actually give us independence and free will, he could have created robots but he wanted us to choose to love. He knew the consequences of giving us this and He’s still suffering those consequences of that every time he has to witness someone he loves suffer loss.

Everything we expect God to do we can actually get by finding out what his covenant promises say about it an partnering with Him. A conditional promise is a promise that will only come to pass when we partner with Him.

The first thing you have to understand when reading this book is that God has given authority to mankind! If you don’t know that then you’re not going to like the rest of this review, bad things don’t happen to good people because God allows it, bad things happen in the world because we allow it! That’s not a statement of blame, that’s a statement that should inspire you to press in harder than ever to find out how this thing works, it’s a promise we haven’t seen fully on the earth yet, but we have seen glimpses of it over the hill…

The “tree of the knowledge of good and evil” meant that we would have the ability to declare what was right and wrong (I believe the theological term is: “situational ethics or situational morals”).

Everyone of us will have our own definition of good and bad, right or wrong, justice and injustice. When you are tempted to believe what you think the right way to do something is, over what the scripture actually says, then you are being tempted with the exact same thing Eve was tempted with!

Mac (the main character) demanded his independence and his right to choose what was right and wrong for himself when something unfair and unjust happened to him. For a long time afterwards he blamed God for allowing it to happen! He lowered his theology of who God is by what he experienced in the story!
In situations like this God’s hands are often tied because he gave dominion over to man and chose to limit himself so we can have a free will!

Luke 10:19 amp
“Behold! I have given you authority and power …over all the power that the enemy  possesses; and nothing shall in any way harm you.”

1 John 3:8 nlt “…the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.”
John 20:21 nlt “…As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”

Job 22:28 amp
You shall also decide and decree a thing, and it shall be established for you; and the light shall shine upon your ways.”

Isaiah 45:11 nkj
“Ask Me of things to come concerning My sons; And concerning the work of My hands, you command Me.”

John 14:12 amp
“…if anyone steadfastly believes in Me, he will himself be able to do the things that I do…”

Matthew 10:7-8 amp
“And as you go …cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons…”

2 Corinthians 5:20 nkj
“We are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us….”

Matthew 16:19 amp
“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind (declare to be improper and unlawful) on earth must be what is already bound in heaven; and whatever you loose (declare lawful) on earth must be what is already loosed in heaven.”
Also Matthew 18:18 amp
Bind g1210
“1. to bind, fasten with chains, to throw into chains.
2. To put under obligation of the law.
3. To forbit, prohibit, declare to be illicit.”

Revelations 5-6 nkj
“You …have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth.”

Psalm 115:16
“The heaven of heavens is for God, but he puts us in charge of the earth.”

Here’s some more of those promises God is longing for us to discover, but we will only be able to pull them down from heaven to earth when we understand our true authority in Him and through Him:

James 5:15
Psalm 103:4

Psalm 4:8
Luke 10:19

“Tales of Glory” Action Toys

These are very cool action toys for kids and, err, big kids like me! I have Jesus and Peter sitting on top of my computer except I have Jesus on the boat and Peter walking on the water!! After all isn’t that what he called us to do? Jesus said:

John 14:12 “…the works that I do shall he do also….”
John 20:21 “…As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”
Luke 10:19 “Behold! I have given you authority and power…”

Everything Jesus done was an example of what could be done through us, it was an invitation to walk the same way He walked! “He who says they abide in God should live their lives as Jesus did” 1 John 2:6

New Spirit Filled Life Bible (NKJ)

I highly recommend this as a very good study tool and everyday use Bible, i’ve had many Bibles and this is easily the best one i’ve owned.

I’m quite fussy when it comes to Bibles, I like the pages to be as white as possible with very little bleed and all the verse numbers to start on a new line and this does all of that perfectly, but theirs more to this Bible. It has lots of useful boxes called “word wealth” sections where they’ve added a little box that tells you a bit more about that particular Hebrew/Greek word and it’s definition in context to the the culture of that language when it was written (see picture below):

The commentary boxes are also very good, theirs enough of it to be interesting but not too much to become annoying. It’s a very good balance between a home study Bible and one you can use in services without it being too big.

Jake Hamilton – Marked by Heaven (CD)

Every song on this album will help you enter into a true place of worship with God. Christians have a habit of defining praise songs as lively and loud and worship songs as sober and quite but this completely redefines that model of what true worship music can be!

Furious Love (DVD)

Furious Love DVD

After Darren Wilson made his first film ‘Finger of God’ which documented real life every day miracles happening on the street, he decided to look deeper into this and the motivation behind it!

So off he went to a crusade in Africa, thinking to himself it’ll be a nice bit of the usual worship, word, and altar call, then off on a nice safari trip he could go, but what he saw there would take him on one eye opening journey… Into the war that is being waged in the spiritual realm! Into a darkness that is so much darker than that which we realise yet there is a light shining through

This journey leads his to the centre of the sex trade in Thailand, massacres of Christians in India, witchcratft festivals in America, and a dump in Madrid, right in the midst of all these dark places are Christians armed with the only weapon that will and can defeat it LOVE!!

This film will shock you, may even scare you but it will sure blow you away. Whether it be the witch who removes his hood when realising he is in the presence of God, or the Congolese village who have been raped, beaten, and tortured yet won’t stop singing ‘We have a friend in Jesus’.

It is a wake up call to the reality of a darkness in the world that is overwhelmingly complicated, yet the answer is so simple and that is to be the light and Love, as Christ first loved us, something which each and every one of us can do!!
